Toni Kroos Faces Boos in Spanish Super Cup Semi-Final Against Atlético Madrid Due to Veiga’s Saudi Move

Real Madrid’s German player, Toni Kroos, found himself the target of loud boos from spectators during the Spanish Super Cup semi-final against Atlético Madrid in Saudi Arabia. The unexpected reaction puzzled observers until they recalled events from the summer of 2023.

The controversy stems from Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga, who was set to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli in a surprising turn of events. Kroos expressed his opinion on the matter as the move progressed. Veiga’s departure from Celta to Al Ahli, instead of the anticipated European options, was a major development reported by Fabrizio Romano. The player accepted a significant offer from Saudi football, and Celta agreed to the buyout clause money for the transfer.

In response to the transfer news, Kroos, known for his straightforwardness, posted a brief comment on Instagram: “shameful.” He seemed incredulous that a young and talented player like Gabri Veiga, who had almost sealed a deal with Napoli, would choose Saudi Arabia at the age of 21. Veiga had also attracted interest from prominent clubs such as Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea.

While the boos during the Super Cup may not negatively impact Kroos, given his extensive experience in high-level matches, it wouldn’t be surprising if he draws motivation from the crowd’s reaction to enhance his performance for Madrid.

After the semi-final, in which Madrid eventually won 5-3, Kroos, never one to hide his feelings, took to Twitter to share his thoughts: “That was fun today. Amazing crowd.” As Real Madrid advances to the final in Saudi Arabia, where they will face either Barcelona or Osasuna on Sunday, Kroos will have another opportunity to play in front of his less-than-adoring fans.
